모처럼 존경하신 교수님 블로그에 들러 좋은 글이 있어 옮겨왔다.

지난번엔 좋은 일로 번개팅하셨는데 바쁘다는 핑게로 가지도 못하고,담엔 어찌 뵐지..

 

우유 한 잔

한 청년이 학비를 벌기 위해 집집마다 다니며 행상 아르바이트를 했습니다. 어느 날,
청년은 배가 고팠으나 주머니엔 동전 한 개뿐. 다음 번 집에서 뭘 좀 먹을 게 없냐고
청해볼까 생각했으나... 대문을 열고 나온 사람이 너무 아름다운 소녀라 그만 말문이
막혀, "물 한 잔 주실 수 있나요?" 이렇게 말했습니다. 소녀는 그 청년이 아마 배가
고픈 것이 아닐까 짐작했습니다. 그래서 우유를 큰 잔에 담아 건네 주었습니다.
청년은 우유 한 잔을 천천히 마신 다음, "우유 값으로 얼마를 드려야 하나요?" 하고
물었습니다. 소녀가 대답했습니다.

"거저 드리는 겁니다. 우리 엄마는 친절에 대한 댓가를 결코 바라지 말라고 하셨어요."

"그렇다면... 진심으로 감사드립니다."

 

청년 하워드 켈리는 그 집을 떠나면서 육신의 힘이 솟구치는 걸 느꼈고, 뿐만 아니라
하나님과 사람에 대한 믿음도 강해지는 느낌을 받았습니다. 당시 그는 너무 힘들어
다 집어치우고 포기할까 고민하고 있었던 것입니다. 

여러 해가 지났을 때, 한 여인이 심각한 중병에 걸렸는데 지역 병원에서 치료를 하지
못해 대도시 병원으로 왔습니다. 희귀한 병이라 특수분야 전문의를 찾아온 것인데,
담당의사는 "닥터 하워드 켈리"! 그 여인이 어느 마을에서 왔다는 말을 듣자마자
켈리의 눈에서 번쩍 빛이 났습니다. 병실로 달려갔습니다. (환자는 그 흰 가운을 입은
유명한 의사가 바로 그 때의 그 청년이라고 알아채지 못했겠지만) 의사는 금방 알아
보았습니다. 온갖 정성으로 최선을 다해 치료하기 시작했습니다.

장기간의 치료와 투병 끝에 드디어 완쾌! 켈리는 수납직원에게 치료비 청구서를

자기에게 보내라고 요청했습니다. 청구서가 도착하자 켈리는 그 종이 귀퉁이에 몇 자
적어넣었습니다. 그 청구서가 환자에게 전달되자 청구서를 열어보는 여인의 손은
떨리고 있었습니다. 평생을 갚아야 할 엄청난 액수일 것이라 짐작한 것입니다.
열어 보니 한 귀퉁이에 이런 말이 씌여 있었습니다.
      
"우유 한 잔으로 완불 되었어요." (서명) Dr. Howard Kelly.

A Glass of Milk
One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school,
found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house.
 However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk.
He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?" "You don't owe me anything," she replied.
"Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness." He said..... "Then I thank you from my heart."

 

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically,
 but his faith in God and man was stronger also. He had been ready to give up and quit. Years later,
 that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city,
 where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation.
 When he heard the name of the town she came from, the light of recognition filled his eyes. Immediately,
 he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her.
 He recognized her at once.
 He went back to the consultation room even more determined to do his best to save her life.
 From that day he gave special attention to her case.

 

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval.
 He looked at it, and then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feed to open it,
for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked,
 and something caught her attention on the side of the bill.

 

She read these words, "Paid in full with one glass of milk." (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.
